Liqui was appointed to lead the control room design for the redesign and extension of the security and control facility at the South Hook LNG Terminal, one of the UK’s most significant energy infrastructure sites.

Working alongside the appointed architect and civil engineering team, the project focused on transforming the existing gatehouse into a more capable security control and visitor reception environment while maintaining the stringent operational standards required for a Tier 1 gas terminal.

The building footprint was extended to the front, allowing the introduction of a full-height glazed façade that significantly improved visibility, natural light and the overall arrival experience. The redesigned entrance now places reception directly beside the main access point, creating a clearer and more welcoming interface for contractors, visitors and VIPs entering the terminal.

Internally, the space supports the operational requirements of a critical infrastructure control environment, where security, monitoring and access management systems must operate continuously and reliably. Control rooms act as the central hub where complex facilities are monitored and coordinated in real time, often integrating surveillance, alarms and operational systems into a single command environment.

Material choices were carefully considered to elevate the quality of the workspace while maintaining durability and compliance with the operational environment. Real oak veneer introduces warmth and tactility, balancing the technical nature of the facility with a refined architectural finish.

A subtle integration of the Qatari national colour references the terminal’s international ownership while remaining restrained and architectural rather than corporate in tone.

Sustainability was embedded throughout the interior specification. Finishes were selected for durability and environmental performance, including waterborne lacquers and low-VOC materials to improve internal air quality and reduce environmental impact.

Alongside the architectural improvements, new digital visitor management technology was integrated to streamline the sign-in process and strengthen compliance procedures across the secure site.

The result is a modern security and control facility that balances operational performance with architectural quality, demonstrating how even mission-critical infrastructure environments can benefit from thoughtful, human-centred design.
